Consumer electronic trends at IFA 2016

Now that I’m settled in after a jam-packed tour of IFA, here’s my take on the trends and developments I saw there.

IFA is still a top event in consumer electronics. As in previous years, all the big consumer electronics brands were present including Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, and myriads of others. Brands invested a lot of time and money to create an enjoyable experience for consumers at the show.

At this year’s IFA, the three biggest consumer trends were in:

  • VR
  • Drones
  • 360º-cameras

 Trends in storage

Specific to Tuxera’s main areas of interest – storage and networking technologies – a hot area of demand is the camera market, including drones. There’s an explosion of 360º-cameras, action cameras, professional drones, cinematographic drones, and other high-performance video recording devices – which all need plenty of data storage. This consumer market could bring good return on investment for SD or UFS card manufacturers.

No truly disruptive technologies at IFA 2016

Although the products at IFA were packed full of features with great designs, I didn’t see any so-called “disruptive technologies.” In fact, it appears the markets are becoming saturated and commoditized. Most of the big brands have similar technologies to offer in all product categories including TVs, drones, routers, music products, and the smart home.

Robots are one area where I would have hoped for more. Despite being real crowd-pleasers at the show, they're still in the early stages of tangible consumer use. At the moment, they’re mostly toys or somewhat clumsy servants designed to help with specific, simple tasks (such as cooking or exercising). That said, it will be interesting to see how the robot market grows in the coming years.

Final thoughts

That’s a wrap for our coverage of IFA 2016! Thanks to everyone that followed us on our tour, and we hope you continue to like our video reviews and interviews. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of our favorite devices from this year’s show.

El Capitan is out, building on top of Yosemite. Major refinements include added user-friendly features and under-hood performance boosts. Upgraded Metal, Apple's graphic processing technology, improves image rendering and resources efficiency making gaming and launching apps much faster.

What else is new? Spotlight search now offers better functionality with more sources and support for natural language input. Users can manage messages with iOS-style gestures and take control of multiple emails with a revamped set of tools. Added Smart Suggestions recognize events and names easily adding them to contacts and calendar. If you like multitasking you will love Split View. Tuxera NTFS for Mac wins the Epsilon Award

Last weekend we have been attending the European Software Conference in Venice where our commercial application, Tuxera NTFS for Mac won the Epsilon Award for software excellence. Voting was open until the end of October and anyone familiar with the product could put in their vote. Thank you for all the votes, we were quite in the lead compared to the other nominees. As most of you know, we released an upgrade recently making the software fully compatible with the latest OS X Mavericks. If you have not updated it already, do it now. It is free for all our registered customers.

This time at ESWC we were showcasing Streambels and discussing Tuxera's path from open source to commercial success. In the introduction we mentioned the always buzzing Finnish start-up scene and Wired UK ranking Helsinki the hottest start-up capital in Europe. In fact, Tuxera is moving the headquarters next week to mentioned in the article Itämerenkatu, previously Nokia space and now the house of very much talked about young companies, Supercell and Jolla.

Mentioned above Streambels - our AirPlay & DLNA media streaming app for Android is almost ready for the public release and we will be showing it off at the Slush next week. If you happen to be there, do not miss the Tuxera booth. To learn more about the app, feel free to visit Streambels website.

All Things Apple - Tuxera NTFS for Mac with Full Support for OS X Mavericks

Second Apple's event this Fall definitely did not disappoint its fans. Along with the complete refresh of most of its product lines, we finally saw the launch of  OS X Mavericks, Apple's latest operating system announced at the beginning of summer. In response we are giving you fully compatible upgrade of Tuxera NTFS for Mac 2013. You can download it now directly from our product page. If you are already a user, it is enough to just download and install it. If not, you can purchase the license in our online store or try it out first using our 15-day long trial version.

Updated version of the software ensures that our users are up to date with the latest developments, while bringing further enhancements to the performance and reliability at the same time. Most recent improvements include faster shut-down times, simplified product key input, added signed kernel extension and more.

For all those of you who are not familiar with it yet, Tuxera NTFS for Mac is our commercial read & write NTFS solution for Mac users, a must-have in a mixed Mac and Windows environment. It offers the fastest NTFS transfer speeds while protecting your data with smart caching layer.
Talking about upgrades, let's have a look at what is new with  OS X Mavericks. Following the launch of the iOS 7, mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads in the end of September, Mavericks brings more than just several refinements for the users. It has been already described as the most powerful and power efficient Apple's operating system up till now. Some of its most interesting features include greater flexibility with multiple display menus, App Nap that saves power while working, interactive notification center letting you get things done without switching the apps, Finder Tabs for reducing the clutter and many more. Anyone who bought an Apple computer since 2007 can download it for free from the App Store. Before updating make sure that you have everything in place. CNET posted a list of 5 things to do before upgrading to Mavericks, check it out!

Enjoy!

Tuxera NTFS for Mac – Everything You Wanted to Know and More

As most of you know, Mac OS X provides limited support for Microsoft Windows NTFS formatted volumes. Out of the box, the files will be in read-only mode so you won’t be able to copy, edit or delete them. However, a lot of us use many different devices at work and at home. It can quickly become very annoying to handle huge amount of digital data that is produced every day. According to a recent survey made by Deloitte, there was a 150% increase in the so-called digital omnivores, people who own at least 3 portable devices (a smart-phone, tablet and a laptop).

Tuxera focuses on development of file system solutions that help to overcome these obstacles. Our Tuxera NTFS for Mac software is widely used by Mac users to transfer, access, edit and store media content from a variety of devices. It is crucial for us to have all updates in place so the solution is fully compatible with the newest Mac OS X versions released by Apple.

Just last week we published our Tuxera NTFS for Mac 2012.3.6 in response to a new Mac OS X 10.8.3 update. The new package includes 2 new exotic languages, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese. Our customers come from around the globe and to cater to all of them we also added multiple currencies to our online store.

Tuxera NTFS for Mac fully supports Mountain Lion

We have been excited to see a huge peak in Tuxera NTFS for Mac downloads after Apple released Mountain Lion earlier in the week. If you haven't updated your copy for a while now it's the right time. You can download the latest Tuxera NTFS for Mac 2012 right here. Tuxera NTFS for Mac 2012 adds several new features and the latest installation package we released right after Mountain Lion has been signed with Gatekeeper, which makes sure you have the right, untampered software from Tuxera. As always, we are eager to hear your feedback and suggestions for new features and other improvements!
